NWO and the National Growth Fund Programme GroenvermogenNL are opening a new call for research into hydrogen infrastructure, for a consortium consisting of researchers and companies. €13 million has been made available for a single application. Applications to form a consortium (via ISAAC) can be submitted until 10 March 2026.

A well-functioning infrastructure is essential to enable the use of hydrogen for a sustainable energy supply. Hydrogen must be able to be transported from production sites and import ports to consumption sites. The development of conversion technologies for hydrogen and hydrogen carriers, as well as transport and storage solutions, play a crucial role in this.

In addition to new technologies, utilising existing infrastructure and integrating new supply chains are also of great importance for the large-scale import of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers. This call therefore focuses on research into the import, conversion, transport and storage of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers, such as ammonia and liquid organic carriers.

Research areas

Proposals within this call must focus on one or more of the following research areas:

  • Import, transport and storage of liquid hydrogen (LH₂)

  • Import, conversion, transport and storage of hydrogen carriers

  • Development and optimisation of port infrastructure, supply chains and conversion hubs

Consortium formation, workshops and budget

A maximum of one application will be approved. The consortium submitting the application will be formed during two multi-day workshops. Participation in both workshops is mandatory for the main applicant. Registration for participation is possible via ISAAC until 10 March 2026. In addition, Stichting GroenvermogenNL is organising an information meeting on 5 February 2026.

The available budget for this call is €13 million. NWO will fund up to 80% of the project costs; the consortium will provide 20% co-funding or own contribution. The exact conditions can be found in the call for proposals.

About the NGF programme GroenvermogenNL

The National Growth Fund Programme GroenvermogenNL is the investment programme for green capital for the Dutch economy and society. Through this programme, green hydrogen should be the driving force behind the transition from a fossil fuel-based society and industry to a sustainable energy supply. This will enable the Netherlands to build a new industry and an attractive business climate. To make this transition possible, well-trained people and a strong knowledge-sharing structure are needed. The investment programme will run until 2028.
