Photonics and optical technologies

Optical systems are part of the key enabling technology Optical Systems and Integrated Photonics. They are engineered systems to refract or reflect light to perform certain optical functions. For example, communication is possible using photons as information carriers.

The optical illumination, sensors and measurement technology in these optical systems operate wavelength-dependently. For higher measurement accuracy, speed and wide applicability, broadband functionality is essential, requiring the development of broadband optical components. These include sensors and sources, computational imaging, hyperspectral components, broadband meta-surfaces and lenses, coatings and GRIN components.

Societal challenges

The development of broadband optical components contributes to societal challenges in areas such as health & care, climate change, security and energy transition. Research with key stakeholders will lead to e.g.:

  • improved spectroscopy and diagnostics for both industrial and medical diagnostics
  • improved semiconductor metrology to enable smaller IC features, generating more computing power with less energy consumption
  • improved earth observation methods allowing satellites to collect more data for detailed understanding of climate, pollution, earth erosion
